Giacomo Puccini operájának mesterien megírt zenei anyaga mögött vígjátéki helyzet rajzolódik ki. Az elhunyt Buoso Donati a pletyka szerint teljes vagyonát egy kolostorra hagyományozta. A gyászoló rokonság-karaván a halott helyett az elveszettnek hitt vagyont siratja. Az unokaöccs azt reméli, hogy az örökség segítségével feleségül veheti szerelmét, a szélhámos hírében álló Gianni Schicchi lányát. A pletyka igaznak bizonyul, Donati valóban a kolostorra hagyta vagyonát. A pénzéhes rokonság és az ifjú szerelmesek álmai szertefoszlanak. Közben a halottas házhoz érkezik a lányának jó partit remélő Schicchi. Hamar felméri a helyzetet és eldönti, hogy segít a bajba jutott családon. Ennek azonban ára van, az árat pedig ő szabja meg…

Opera compusă cu măiestrie de Giacomo Puccini, ascunde o farsă impecabilă. Se zvoneşte că răposatul Buoso Donati şi-a lăsat întreaga avere unei mănăstiri. Alaiul rudelor îndoliate în loc să-l bocească, plânge după moştenirea pierdută. Nepotul nutreşte speranţa că va putea – cu ajutorul banilor răposatului – să o ia de nevastă pe fiica lui Gianni Schicchi, vestit pehlivan din provincie. Zvonul se adevereşte. Speranţele rudelor şi visele tinerilor îndrăgostiţi se spulberă. În casa mortului soseşte între timp Schicchi care speră într-o partidă profitabilă pentru fiica sa. Analizând situaţia ivită se hotărăşte „să ajute” familia aflată în necaz. Şi precum ştim, totul are un preţ…

Beneath the masterfully written musical material of Giacomo Puccini’s opera lies a comic situation. Rumour has it that the deceased Buoso Donati has bequeathed his entire fortune to a monastery, causing his relatives to mourn for the property, rather than the deceased. His nephew hopes that, with the help of the inheritance, he can marry his beloved, the daughter of the swindler, Gianni Schicchi. However, the rumour proves to be true. Donati has indeed left all his belongings to the monastery and the dreams of the money-grubbing relatives and of the young lovers melt into thin air. Meanwhile, Gianni Schicchi, who desires an eligible partner for his daughter, arrives at the house of the deceased. He quickly assesses the situation and decides to help out the family. This, however, has a price, and the price will be set by him…
