A mizantróp a legvitatottabb Molière-darabok egyike, elsősorban a főszereplő Alceste jelleme miatt. Gyergyai Albert írja 1955-ben Molière hőséről egy Madách Kamara-beli A mizantróp-előadás kapcsán: „Ha akarom, érett, nemes, szenvedélyes, sőt hősies férfi, aki kora bűneit és fonákságait jogos keserűséggel ostorozza; (…) ha akarom, zsémbes, zsörtölődő, mindenkibe belekötő, hebehurgya “ellenzéki”, alkalmazkodásra képtelen, naív és nehézkes medvetípus. (…) Színészeknek és rendezőknek a darabról való felfogásuk elsősorban, sőt kizárólag Alcesteről való felfogásuktól függ, azzal áll, vagy azzal bukik.”
Tompa Gábor változatában a cselekmény korunkban játszódik, a máról szól, a mának.

Mizantropul este una dintre cele mai controversate piese ale lui Molière, în primul rând datorat caracterului personajului principal, Alceste. În 1955, Albert Gyergyai a scris următoarele despre o producție a Mizantropului de către Madách Kamara: „Dacă vreau, pot să-l văd drept un bărbat matur, nobil, pasional și chiar eroic, care își reproşează păcatele şi căile răsucite ale tinereţii cu o justificată amărăciune; (…)Dacă vreau, pot să-l văd drept un dizident irascibil, certăreţ, arţăgos, care se leagă de toţi, neadaptabil, tipul ‘ursului’ naiv şi greoi. (…) Opinia actorilor și a regizorilor asupra piesei depinde în primul rând și poate în mod exclusiv de percepția lor despre personajul lui Alceste. ” În versiunea lui Gábor Tompa, acţiunea are loc în vremurile noastre; se vorbeşte despre prezent, şi pentru prezent.

The Misanthrope is one of the most controversial Molière pieces, primarily due to the character of the protagonist, Alceste. In 1955, Albert Gyergyai wrote the following about a Madách Kamara production of The Misanthrope: “If I want to see him that way, he is a mature, noble, passionate, and even heroic man, who whips his early sins and wretches with justified bitterness; (…) If I want to see him in another way, he is a grumpy, creepy, stubborn, heedless dissenter, a non-adaptive, naive and cumbersome bear-type. (…) The actors’ and directors’ view on the play firstly and exclusively depend on their perception of Alceste.” In Gábor Tompa’s version, the plot takes place in our age; it is about and for the present time.
